[Hot Bike Magazine] 2010 Harley-Davidson CVO Model Lineup

2010 Harley Cvo Models FLHTCUSE CVO What is it about being the first one on the block to get the new toy, like the latest and greatest cell phone or iPod, the "new" whatever it is? This is the excitement the staff at HOT BIKE feels when the new Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicles Operation (CVO) models are released and we get the first run at them. This year marks 11 years of CVO model releases, and Harley has unleashed four new better-than-ever CVO bikes for us to test ride and review.

If you are not familiar with CVO bikes and what makes them different over standard OE Harleys, the differences are that H-D designs and builds limited production, factory-custom motorcycles for customers who appreciate brilliant chrome, exquisite paint, thundering power, and the exclusivity of owning and riding a special motorcycle. Each 2010 CVO model is powered by the fuel-injected Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110ci V-Twin, the largest-displacement engine produced by Harley-Davidson. This engine is only available from the factory in CVO models. The CVO bikes are customized using existing, as well as all-new exclusive to CVO models components from the Harley-Davidson Genuine parts catalog, and are often used to introduce new custom components and techniques before they are offered as individual accessories. The bikes are backed by a two-year, unlimited-mileage warranty

This year we were flown out to Half Moon Bay, California, to the Ritz-Carlton where the comfort of the big fluffy bathrobes and the 10 oversized soft pillows per bed felt as good as the new seats on the CVOs. This was a great place to start our trip and we looked forward to the opportunity of riding along the central California coastline. The coolest part of the trip was riding the CVO models for the first time. Since nobody has seen these bikes yet, gas stops usually took awhile as we explained to curious folk who we are, what biz we have on these bikes, and what kind of models we were riding. But it's a small price to pay to be one of the lucky individuals to have such an opportunity.

FLHTCUSE CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide
MSRP $35,999 and limited to a production of 3,450 units. We started out on the oldest in the CVO lineup, the Ultra Classic Electra Glide. The Ultra is back for its fifth year and is built on the same Touring chassis as introduced in 2009 on the OE Glide. The stiffened single-spar backbone frame and newly designed and color-matching frame and swingarm are a huge improvement. In the handling department, the ride was nice and very smooth. As we were riding the twisty roads, the bike was easy to lean over at different speeds. The Ultra has excellent stopping power, especially for a bigger bike.

New styling cues on the Ultra included Harley's Roulette wheels, a 17x130 for the front and a 16x180 for the rear. The rear of the bike had some of the most noticeable changes from previous CVO Ultra models. This one comes with a color-matched and LED-equipped Tour-Pak with integrated brake and taillights and a push-button LED on the underside of the pack for illuminating down into the saddlebags. Switching from an incandescent bulb taillight to LED lighting not only offers brighter lights, but it also frees up storage capacity within the Tour-Pak.

Another upgrade is the change from Powerlet-type 12-volt sockets to cigarette-lighter-style outlets. Fender filler strips and engine guard fairing lowers also match the paint scheme of the inner fairing assembly. The Ultra also features an 80-watt Harmon/Kardon Advanced audio system with CB, intercom, and navigation systems. For comfort and tour-ability, the Ultra now has an adjustable rider backrest and a two-way adjustable (up/down, in/out) lumbar support in the passenger backrest. The Ultra's color schemes are Scarlet Red Pearl/Dark Slate with Flame graphic, Riptide Blue/Titanium Dust with Flame graphic, and Burnt Amber/Hot Citrus with Flame graphic.

FLHXSE CVO Street Glide
MSRP $30,999 and limited to a production of 3,500 units. Harley calls the CVO Street Glide "The ultimate hot rod bagger." It features the Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine, and the six-speed Cruise Drive transmission featureing a new helical-cut fifth gear. The Street Glide features new 18-inch front and rear Agitator contrast chrome wheels with matching floating rotors, hydraulic rear shocks with adjustable preload, a low-profile custom seat with matching passenger backrest, and a lowered-and-trimmed front fender. The new extended saddlebags are a one-piece, injection-molded, full-depth design that offers increased capacity. Color-matched rear fascia panel fills the space between each saddlebag and the rear fender, and it incorporates LED stop/tail/turn lights.

A new custom paint scheme is offered in three-color combinations, with color-matched front fairing skirt, upper fork slider covers, and license plate light cover. The Glide's paint schemes are Candy Concord with Pale Gold Leaf Graphics, Spiced Rum with Gold Leaf Graphics, and Tequila Sunrise with Pale Gold Leaf Graphics. The bike wouldn't be complete without standard ABS and cruise control, security alarm, and a 40-watt Harmon/Kardon stereo system. Enhancing the Glide's looks are the Rumble Collection grips, footboard inserts, passenger and shifter pegs, and brake pedal pad. This was a bike I enjoyed riding! There is plenty of room for gear on the Glide without it being oversized, and the bike has lots of power and is comfortable. I would like to get my hands on this model for our next trip to Sturgis.

The CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide is a limited-production motorcycle for the discerning touring rider that combines custom paint, a potent powertrain and a well-chosen array of top-line accessories.

The CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide is built on the innovative Touring chassis introduced by Harley-Davidson in 2009, based on a single-spar, rigid backbone frame and a stout swingarm developed to withstand the demands of long-haul touring riders and today’s more-powerful engines.

Classic Harley Christmas Maintenance & Brief Ride

I have been ignoring my 1924 Harley-Davidson V-twin motorcycle for a couple of months and wanted to spend some time going over it in the garage now that we have more than 6 inches of snow on the ground.

I wanted to get it up on my bike stand to look it over a bit and to see if I can mount up the side stand I had recently bought on ebay. These was not real vintage Harley parts but exact copies of real ones. When I bought this old Harley almost 20 years ago it came with a side stand, although I don’t believe Harley offered one until a few years after 1924. The stand was bent in such a way that I was never confident that it would hold up the old Harley if it started to roll back or tip over. So I took off the old one and put it away. I happen to like side stands on my motorcycles as long as I also have a rear or center stand too.

I popped the old Harley up on the motorcycle lift and raised it up so I can study it and not have to bend over to do the work. For comparison I pulled out the old side stand that was on the bike when I bought it. They were similar but with different bend and length of the arm.

Harley ChristmasVintage Harley parts - old side stand and hardware on BOTTOM, Reproduction on TOP. Similar but different!

I know the new reproduction mounting bracket will fit right on because the old one had been there until about a year ago when I removed it from the arm welded to the frame that the front of the floorboard mount to as shown in the photo below.
Harley Christmas1924 Harley before installing side stand. Notice the original vintage Harley part with the notched plate underneath.
Harley ChristmasPulling away the front of the floorboard on my classic Harley

I loosened the two nuts that hold the left side floorboard in place and removed the front one. This allowed me to slide the front of the floorboard off the stud on the front giving me access to slide on the side stand mounting hardware.

Harley ChristmasInstalling the new mounting hardware for the side stand

I slid the new mounting hardware into place and then pulled down the side stand to see where it falls and if it lines up properly with the cut-out notch in the old plate already mounted under the floorboards. I don’t know what exact year the old plate is but I am pretty sure it is a genuine vintage Harley part. I then moved slid the hardware in-board and out until I found the best location. Then I rotated it around checking the angles before determining the ideal location. Then I tightened down the 2 set screws, torqued down the nut holding the side stand in place and reattached the floorboard tightening down the two mounting nuts.
Harley ChristmasNew reproduction stand On my classic Harley JD. It tucks up reasonably well.

I took the bike off the lift and rolled it outside to the driveway to see how the bike looked and leaned on the new side stand. It leans the bike at an angle I am much more confidence in than the old one with the shorter and different angled side stand.

Harley ChristmasSide stand installed and the Old Harley looking good!

After I finished installing the side stand I started the bike and let it idle a little outside in the near freezing temperatures. I was impressed that I got it running in less than a dozen kicks. And it warmed up easily and settled down into a nice easy idle in little time.

There is plenty of snow on the ground but the roads have been cleared for days. So I took her out for a brief Christmas Day ride around the neighborhood.

After the ride I put the Harley back up on the lift to have another look around and that’s when I spotted what looked like the first traces of battery acid build up on a corner of the battery box. More details to follow on this when I get time.

Tim Blakemore Racing Bristol Top Fuel Harley

Specification and history of Wendy's Top Fuel Harley Davidson

blakemore racing top fuel wendyConceived, designed and built in Bristol, Wendy's thundering 1870cc nitro burning Top Fuel Supertwin is another example of the diversity of the motorcycle work we carry out here at Tim Blakemore Racing.

This bike is a brutal beast , and in basic concept, fairly simple: A massive engine, to which huge quantities of lethal nitromethane fuel are pumped. Huge power and torque is transferred to the super sticky slick by a slider clutch - no gearbox! No clutch lever on the bars, the levers are for front and rear brakes.
Of course the details are far from simple, and our long experience of tuning and repairing Harley Davidsons has come to the fore in selecting the best components from around the World, to be combined with parts engineered here in Bristol.

Riding a bike like this is not for the faint hearted: Nitromethane pushes an engine to the limits and beyond, sometimes resulting in spectacular explosions. No wonder then that Wendy wears a bomb proof vest over her leathers!

wendy clutterbuck top fuel harleyWendy's Story:

I have been around the sport of Drag Racing since the 70's! At the time we lived in Canada where my Dad, Steve ' Bear' Clutterbuck, raced at the local Drag strip in Edmonton Alberta. We always went along to watch and help out, although I'm not sure how much help I actually was at 5 years old!

Wendy launches the Tim Blakemore Racing/Rock Oil sponsored 'Big Twin' based bike at Shakespeare County Raceway.

wendy sportster based top fuelWe started Drag racing again in 1994, where I crewed for my dad Steve in the N.A.S.T. (National Association of Supertwins) Top Gas class, with a Harley Davidson Sportster based petrol drag bike. We were eventually introduced to the wonder of Nitro Methane by our good friend Ben Beneke and never looked back: Moving into the Top Fuel class and winning the championship in 1999.

We moved on to build the next bike using a 114ci Harley Evo 'Big Twin' with an 11" slick, which I eventually had a go on at Santa Pod Raceway in 2005.

Wendy gets some heat into the rear slick on the old Sportster based Top Fuel bike.

I decided after a decade of crewing I wanted to race and bought our old Sportster back at the end of the 2005 season. I spent all winter getting it ready for the track, completely rebuilding the engine and bringing the whole bike up to date.

I went on to win two consecutive Top Fuel Championships in 2006 and 2007, & runner up in 2008, making me the first female in History to ever win a Nitro title on a motorcycle.

I decided to move up another gear and bought and rebuilt the 114ci Evo. I haven't had much track time with this machine as of yet, and after a few teething problems with the fuel system caused a serious lean out, torching both sets of cylinder heads!

wendys top fuel trophyLife is very hectic at the moment, running a very busy motorcycle tuning centre in Bristol with partner Tim Blakemore and also crewing for Tim on his Kawasaki sponsored funny bike. I hope to return to the track this year, 2010, with a brand new set of custom billet heads and the addition of a racepak data logger where the bike should happily run into the 7s.

Originally built by Steve 'Bear' Clutterbuck in 1993. Bought and rebuilt in 2005 by Wendy Clutterbuck. Running consistent 8.70-8.90 @ 150mph on a diet of between 94 - 98% Nitromethane.

HARLEY DAVIDSON

harley davidson pictures
Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG, formerly HDI[3]), often abbreviated H-D or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the first decade of the 20th century, it was one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression.[4] Harley-Davidson also survived a period of poor quality control and competition with Japanese manufacturers.[5]

The company sells heavyweight (over 750 cc) motorcycles designed for cruising on the highway. Harley-Davidson motorcycles (popularly known as “Harleys”) have a distinctive design and exhaust note. They are especially noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper-style of motorcycle.[6] Except for the modern VRSC model family, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classic Harley designs. Harley-Davidson’s attempts to establish itself in the light motorcycle market have met with limited success and have largely been abandoned since the 1978 sale of its Italian Aermacchi subsidiary.

Harley-Davidson sustains a loyal brand community which keeps active through clubs, events, and a museum. Licensing of the Harley-Davidson logo accounts for almost 5% of the company’s net revenue.

Harley's amazing downhill ride

Top HarleyNEW YORK (Fortune) -- Today is an anniversary for motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson that it would just as soon not remember.

On February 3rd a year ago, with the stock market hurtling toward its March lows, Harley (HOG, Fortune 500) announced it had sold $600 million in five-year notes at a nosebleed interest rate of 15%. Yes, 15%, because the company needed the money to fund its finance company and had to pay what the market demanded.

The market, in this case, included Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire-Hathaway (BRK.B) had been husbanding cash for years, and who was pleased to give $300 million of that money to Harley at 15%. The other $300 million was put up by Davis Advisors, a mutual fund company whose Chris Davis saw Harley notes as a fine investment for his funds (which, by the way, also own Harley stock).

The annual $90 million of interest those notes carry certainly didn't help out Harley's 2009 results, though a recession that was killing sales of discretionary goods would have led to a financial wreck in any case. For the year, Harley reported shipments that were down 27% from 2008 and ended up with a $55 million loss -- its first red ink since 1993.

Still, 2009 had its redeeming features for Harley, and these certainly began with its stock price. For the year, as investors anticipated the company regaining its zoom, its stock rose by 53%.

Meanwhile, the great 2009 bull-market in junk-bond prices was producing an astounding turn in interest rates. In December, Harley sold still another block of 5-year notes -- $500 million -- at a 5¾% rate.

For swings in what it costs to do business, and for a reminder of just how remarkable the securities markets were in 2009, a 15% rate down to 5¾% is an amazing ride.
