Starting in the year 1903, a group of men from Milwaukee, Wisconsin dreamed of a new motorcycle that was different from anything built before. The group was made up of Walter and Arthur Davidson along with William Harley. Using tools and materials borrowed from friends, this group built the first Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The design of the first Harley Davidson motorcycle was a loop frame not seen up to that point. The group ended up with a total of three bikes built in their first year. The next major addition was the adding of William Davidson to the group in 1907. By that year, the group had made over 150 motorcycles. Harley Davidson had the wisdom of offering us a brand new XL1200X “Forty-Eight” motorcycle for 48 hours, and we decided to take them up on it. This is our review. The idea being that with young men running to cheaper Japanese bikes or more stylish Triumphs and Ducati Monsters, Harley needed to react to attract a younger buyer. While HD’s groceries are clearly bought by older riders who want their larger touring bikes, HD also realized they need to start appealing to a younger crowd or they will get left behind. And thus the Sportster line was reinvigorated, adding the XL1200X “Forty-Eight” this year to even further carve out a niche in this more “stylish” market. While all the Sportsters are great template bikes — built with the assumption they will be customized by the individual buyer — the Forty-Eight takes the development even further, with its modifications carefully chosen to make it look more like a bobber style bike right out of the box. The bike features a fat 130 mm front tire, spoke wheels, peanut tank (first introduced in 1948, giving the bike its namesake), small single seat, undermounted mirrors, chopped mud guards and forward-mounted controls. Sure the Forty-Eight is still made to accommodate a crowded boutique industry of aftermarket products (tanks, handlebars, springer seats, pipes, air filters, etc.), but the idea is to get you closer to your desired look from the starting line. What it does share with its Sportster XL range brethren is the air cooled 1200 CC 45 degree V twin — a beautiful engine that offers plenty of low-end torque. Which we discovered when we mounted our collective Harleys and hit the Pacific Coast Highway on a warm California afternoon.

Top US motorcycle producer Harley-Davidson opened its first and only authorized store in Beijing April 8. The Beijing Harley-Davidson, operated by Beijing FHL Motorcycle Club, is located at Dongfeng Nanlu, by the North Fourth Ring Road. Three types of Harley-Davidson bikes: Touring, V-Rod and Soft Tail – are on sale. The store has had around 400 visitors (half of them foreigners) since it opened, according to Shao Boming, the sales representative.
"To date, we have done around 70,000 yuan business, including selling four bikes, as well as souvenirs like wallets, glasses, hats, belts, and smallbadges." During the interview Shao took a call from the United States. "I think that this customer is collecting Harley-Davidson souvenirs from stores in different countries," Shao said.
Besides the motorcycles and souvenirs, the store also sells Harley-Davidson accessories and fittings, and provides customers with customizing services.
"Almost all the people buying motorcycles won't keep its original appearance and get them custozed in order to appear unique. The prices are different according to their requirements," Shao said."We plan to add more things in the store in the future,” said Zhao Hui, the manager, “Of course, we plan ttart chain stores. However, it depends on the business operation and the market in Beijing."
Beijing Harley-Davidson is also getting involved with the Beijing Harley-Davidson Motorcycle club. People who have bought Harley-Davidson motorcycles will become VIP members automatically. People who have not bought a motorcycle can also join the club.

Harley-Davidson, Inc. has announced today that it will unveil its plans formally enter the motorcycle market in India, where it expects to start selling its motorcycle in 2010. The company has found two subsidiaries to unveil its bike in Gurgaon, near Delhi and has begun the process of seeking dealers.
Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and Chief Operating Officer, Matthew Levatich, is an invited speaker at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers annual convention on August 28, and will provide further details on the company’s plans then.
“As India continues to extend its global reach, so does Harley-Davidson,” said Levatich. “We believe Harley-Davidson has outstanding opportunities for continued growth around the world.”
The company’s current approach is to import its motorcycles, accessories and riding gear and it will continue to evaluate how best to evolve its approach to the market as Harley-Davidson’s business in India grows.
“India is important to our long-term vision of being a truly global company,” said Harley-Davidson Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Wandell. “We are committed to India for the long term, and we are focused right now on establishing a strong foundation.”
India is the second-largest motorcycle market in the world, with sales dominated by small, inexpensive bikes used as basic transportation. However, India’s rapidly growing economy, rising middle class and significant investment in construction of new highways have opened the door to leisure motorcycle riding.
“Given the rapid development of India’s economy and physical infrastructure, this is exactly the right time to bring the world’s greatest motorcycles to one of the world’s largest motorcycling nations,” said Levatich. “Our unique brand, distinctive motorcycles and strong experience in the leisure motorcycle market make us naturally suited to help lead and define the next era of motorcycling in India.”
Harley-Davidson is the global leader in cruising and touring motorcycles and ranks as one of the strongest brands in the world, with motorcycle sales now in more than 70 countries.

The Harley-Davidson subsidiary in India will be led by Managing Director Anoop Prakash, who said the company has begun the process of identifying initial dealers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Punjab State.
“As a key next step, we are looking for local dealer partners who share our passion and commitment to building customer relationships, the Harley-Davidson brand and our business in India for the long term,” said Prakash.

* Showa Big Piston Front fork (BPF) eliminates many of the internal components used in a cartridge-type fork, resulting in lighter overall fork weight. The large-diameter of the BPF internal piston allows a reduction in damping pressure for outstanding feedback and smooth action. Rebound and compression damping may be fine tuned with adjuster screws located on top of the fork bolts. The spring pre-load is adjusted with a M5 hex screw on the axle holders.
