Harley-Davidson: Master H.O.G.s of Brand Loyalty

Harley Davidson Bike[Authored by Evans Smith, MBA Candidate] Brand loyalty consists of a consumer's commitment to repurchase a particular brand of product. Over the years, Harley-Davidson has evolved from a motorcycle shop to a lifestyle. Touting symbols on the backs of jackets and other accessories of the American Eagle and the American Flag, Harley Davidson wants to show that they represent freedom.

HOG Harley
Harley Owners Group (HOG)

Each customer that purchases a Harley-Davidson motorcycle receives a free 1-year membership in the Harley Owners Group (HOG). This group is the epitome of brand loyalty. The H.O.G. organization consists of over 295,000 worldwide members with 900 local chapters and is the largest company-sponsored motorcycle enthusiast group in the world. With a mission statement of "To Ride and Have Fun,” who wouldn’t want to join the group? All of us have been driving down the interstate minding our own business only to get passed by a no less than 20-member motorcycle crew. Most of the group likely consists of weekend warriors that want to get out and release their inner rebel spirit. HOG does an excellent job of capitalizing on this. HOG sponsors State, National, and even International rallies for that span across all 50 states and 6 continents. Live bands, parades, bike shows, and games are just a few of the activities that take place during these events at every planned stopping point.

Woman Harley RiderWomens Day Ride

Niche Marketing by definition is targeting a more narrowly defined customer group seeking a distinctive set of benefits. Within the HOG membership group, Harley-Davidson has targeted the specific niche market of women. As one example, they sponsor a Women’s Day Ride in Daytona Beach, FL each year, which benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camps. The event is hosted by Karen Davidson, great-granddaughter of one of the H-D founders, who rides with over 500 women on the last leg of the rally into Daytona Beach. From there, the women are invited to attend the seminar on “Function, Fit, and Style Made Just for Women." Harley-Davidson does an excellent job of relating to the female rider. The company understands that logging several hours on a motorcycle can be physically demanding. On their website, they have created the “10 Steps to Someday” for women to follow in order to achieve their goal of these long bike rides. They state on the site that “Whether your goal is to ride to Sturgis or take an overnight trip to a bed and breakfast, pick a date, book some vacation time, and make some reservations. And know that when that date arrives, you’ll be on the road, riding free.”

Harley-Davidson's President and CEO, Richard Teerlink says Harley-Davidson Motorcycles represents to America, "the adventurous pioneer spirit, the wild west, having your own horse, and going where you want to go - the motorcycle takes on some attributes of the iron horse. It suggests personal freedom and independence.” If this sounds like your calling, then I advise you to saddle up, cowboy.

Harley Davidson Expansion Plans For India

Harley Davidson Expansion Plans For IndiaHarley-Davidson, Inc. has announced today that it will unveil its plans formally enter the motorcycle market in India, where it expects to start selling its motorcycle in 2010.

The company has found two subsidiaries to unveil its bike in Gurgaon, near Delhi and has begun the process of seeking dealers.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and Chief Operating Officer, Matthew Levatich, is an invited speaker at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers annual convention on August 28, and will provide further details on the company’s plans then.

“As India continues to extend its global reach, so does Harley-Davidson,” said Levatich. “We believe Harley-Davidson has outstanding opportunities for continued growth around the world.”

The company’s current approach is to import its motorcycles, accessories and riding gear and it will continue to evaluate how best to evolve its approach to the market as Harley-Davidson’s business in India grows.

“India is important to our long-term vision of being a truly global company,” said Harley-Davidson Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Wandell. “We are committed to India for the long term, and we are focused right now on establishing a strong foundation.”

India is the second-largest motorcycle market in the world, with sales dominated by small, inexpensive bikes used as basic transportation. However, India’s rapidly growing economy, rising middle class and significant investment in construction of new highways have opened the door to leisure motorcycle riding.

“Given the rapid development of India’s economy and physical infrastructure, this is exactly the right time to bring the world’s greatest motorcycles to one of the world’s largest motorcycling nations,” said Levatich. “Our unique brand, distinctive motorcycles and strong experience in the leisure motorcycle market make us naturally suited to help lead and define the next era of motorcycling in India.”

Harley-Davidson is the global leader in cruising and touring motorcycles and ranks as one of the strongest brands in the world, with motorcycle sales now in more than 70 countries.

“Harley-Davidson fulfills dreams for people around the world through life-changing products and experiences,” said Levatich. “The Harley-Davidson brand represents self-expression, adventure, the freedom of the open road, and belonging to a global community – a family of riders. We know the relevance of the Harley-Davidson brand rings true in India just as it does in other markets around the world.”

The company will focus its initial steps in India on growing the Harley-Davidson brand through a variety of consumer experiences and on establishing a local dealer network.

The Harley-Davidson subsidiary in India will be led by Managing Director Anoop Prakash, who said the company has begun the process of identifying initial dealers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Punjab State.

“As a key next step, we are looking for local dealer partners who share our passion and commitment to building customer relationships, the Harley-Davidson brand and our business in India for the long term,” said Prakash.

RSD Harley Cafe Sportster

Top Harley SportEXCLUSIVE Top US custom builder Roland Sands Design has taken a long, hard look at the evergreen Harley Sportster, and put together a very sexy package of modifications. Here are the very first pictures of the RSD Café kit that will be on sale soon—a kit that’s designed to be affordable, so owners will be able to buy the parts in stages to spread the cost. The basics will include pipes (built by Vance and Hines), moto pegs, and a coil and key relocation bracket. Also on the list are wheels, some very slick brake discs, a new pulley and a fork brace. At the moment, the café seat, gauge/headlight relocation kit and velocity stack are still at the prototype stage, but they should be in production by mid 2010. The result looks stunning to our eyes—check the full set of images on our Facebook page—and there’s even more good news to come: in the New Year, RSD is turning the XR1200 into a fully functioning race bike that’s still street legal. Can’t wait to see that one. [Thanks to Rodney Aguiar. For an even more radical Sportster, check out Dylan Robb's show-winning carbon fiber Harley Davidson Sportster.]

With a tank and tail section designed to evoke the legendary Harley-Davidson XR750 - the king of the gritty American flat-track scene - the XR1200X puts its mechanical character on display. Wide flat-track bars and rearset footpegs position an assertive rider for active control. Key XR1200X Features

* Showa Big Piston Front fork (BPF) eliminates many of the internal components used in a cartridge-type fork, resulting in lighter overall fork weight. The large-diameter of the BPF internal piston allows a reduction in damping pressure for outstanding feedback and smooth action. Rebound and compression damping may be fine tuned with adjuster screws located on top of the fork bolts. The spring pre-load is adjusted with a M5 hex screw on the axle holders.
* Showa rear shocks feature 36mm pistons with piggy-back nitrogen charged reservoirs. The compression damping may be adjusted with a knob on top of the reservoir. Rebound is adjusted with a thumb wheel on the lower clevis. Rear spring pre-load is also adjustable.
* Nissin® dual front brakes feature 292mm full-floating rotors and four-piston calipers.
* Isolation-mounted XL Evolution 1200 cc V-Twin engine with black powdercoat finish features downdraft Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), high-performance camshafts, precision oil-cooled cylinder heads and a large-capacity oil cooler. Compression ratio is 10:1. The engine is rated at 74 ft. lbs. peak torque @ 4000 rpm (per SAE J1349).
* Upswept, high-volume 2-1-2 straight-shot exhaust system with satin black finish offers extra cornering clearance.
* Chassis features a high-performance designed tubular mild steel frame. The rigid, cast-aluminum swingarm is engineered to enhance handling.
* Dunlop® Qualifier D209 tires were designed specifically for the XR1200X.

2010 Harley-Davidson Touring First Ride

When you hear the name Harley-Davidson what do you think of? More than anything the answer matches the age of the person you ask. If you’re an older rider than there is a fair chance that you’ll feel this motorcycle marque is the de facto motorcycling standard. But for younger folks, the H-D brand usually congers up images of under-performing motorcycles built more for posing in the parking lot than ripping around on the streets. After spending two days at the controls of Harley-Davidson’s 2010 model offerings, though, I have to admit there is something more to the brand than I pessimistically presumed. One of the coolest things about this coming year’s line-up is the broad range of motorcycling options afforded by the folks in Milwaukee.
2010-harley-davidsonThe 2010 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Limited bundles many popular options together and adds a bigger 103 cubic-inch Twin Cam engine. But is it built to shred?

2010-harley-davidson
This is without question the coolest Harley-Davidson motorcycle offering for 2010. Harley calls it the Road Glide Custom. We call it Street Crusher.

Just how many motorcycles you ask? Thirty four. Add to the mix the various options and colorways, not to mention the hundreds of pages of factory performance parts and accessories, and you’ve got virtually limitless choices. From the affordable and newbie friendly $6999 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 to the VRSC line of liquid-cooled power cruisers, for this coming year there is something for any would-be motorcyclist. They even offer hopped-up, pre-customized machines straight from the factory. (Make sure to check out the 2010 Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) First Ride article to see how they perform. Additionally, be sure to check out the 2010 Harley-Davidson Motorcycles First Look article to discover the individual changes to the Harley’s standard production line-up.)

Out of its entire fleet, H-D’s touring motorcycles are not only the most comfortable to ride, but also the most fun – especially on curvy pavement. For 2010 the touring line grows by three bikes: the Electra Glide Ultra Limited, the Road Glide Custom, and the Street Glide Trike. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to ride the Street Glide Trike, however, we will be riding on three-wheels in the future, so for now we will discuss the aforementioned two.

Harley Davidson to launch 12 bikes in India 2010

Harley 2010As discussed earlier, Harley Davidson was planning to launch its bikes in India (View), but the launch date was not out. Harley Davidson announced in Auto Expo that it will launch 12 bikes in India in 2010. This bike will be priced, in the range of Rs 6.95 lakhs to Rs 34.95 lakh, ex-showroom price new Delhi. Booking of these bikes will start in April 2010 and the delivery will start in June 2010. Dealer-ship will be announced in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chandigarh.

[Hot Bike Magazine] 2010 Harley-Davidson CVO Model Lineup

2010 Harley Cvo Models FLHTCUSE CVO What is it about being the first one on the block to get the new toy, like the latest and greatest cell phone or iPod, the "new" whatever it is? This is the excitement the staff at HOT BIKE feels when the new Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicles Operation (CVO) models are released and we get the first run at them. This year marks 11 years of CVO model releases, and Harley has unleashed four new better-than-ever CVO bikes for us to test ride and review.

If you are not familiar with CVO bikes and what makes them different over standard OE Harleys, the differences are that H-D designs and builds limited production, factory-custom motorcycles for customers who appreciate brilliant chrome, exquisite paint, thundering power, and the exclusivity of owning and riding a special motorcycle. Each 2010 CVO model is powered by the fuel-injected Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110ci V-Twin, the largest-displacement engine produced by Harley-Davidson. This engine is only available from the factory in CVO models. The CVO bikes are customized using existing, as well as all-new exclusive to CVO models components from the Harley-Davidson Genuine parts catalog, and are often used to introduce new custom components and techniques before they are offered as individual accessories. The bikes are backed by a two-year, unlimited-mileage warranty

This year we were flown out to Half Moon Bay, California, to the Ritz-Carlton where the comfort of the big fluffy bathrobes and the 10 oversized soft pillows per bed felt as good as the new seats on the CVOs. This was a great place to start our trip and we looked forward to the opportunity of riding along the central California coastline. The coolest part of the trip was riding the CVO models for the first time. Since nobody has seen these bikes yet, gas stops usually took awhile as we explained to curious folk who we are, what biz we have on these bikes, and what kind of models we were riding. But it's a small price to pay to be one of the lucky individuals to have such an opportunity.

FLHTCUSE CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide
MSRP $35,999 and limited to a production of 3,450 units. We started out on the oldest in the CVO lineup, the Ultra Classic Electra Glide. The Ultra is back for its fifth year and is built on the same Touring chassis as introduced in 2009 on the OE Glide. The stiffened single-spar backbone frame and newly designed and color-matching frame and swingarm are a huge improvement. In the handling department, the ride was nice and very smooth. As we were riding the twisty roads, the bike was easy to lean over at different speeds. The Ultra has excellent stopping power, especially for a bigger bike.

New styling cues on the Ultra included Harley's Roulette wheels, a 17x130 for the front and a 16x180 for the rear. The rear of the bike had some of the most noticeable changes from previous CVO Ultra models. This one comes with a color-matched and LED-equipped Tour-Pak with integrated brake and taillights and a push-button LED on the underside of the pack for illuminating down into the saddlebags. Switching from an incandescent bulb taillight to LED lighting not only offers brighter lights, but it also frees up storage capacity within the Tour-Pak.

Another upgrade is the change from Powerlet-type 12-volt sockets to cigarette-lighter-style outlets. Fender filler strips and engine guard fairing lowers also match the paint scheme of the inner fairing assembly. The Ultra also features an 80-watt Harmon/Kardon Advanced audio system with CB, intercom, and navigation systems. For comfort and tour-ability, the Ultra now has an adjustable rider backrest and a two-way adjustable (up/down, in/out) lumbar support in the passenger backrest. FLHXSE CVO Street Glide
MSRP $30,999 and limited to a production of 3,500 units. Harley calls the CVO Street Glide "The ultimate hot rod bagger." It features the Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine, and the six-speed Cruise Drive transmission featureing a new helical-cut fifth gear. The Street Glide features new 18-inch front and rear Agitator contrast chrome wheels with matching floating rotors, hydraulic rear shocks with adjustable preload, a low-profile custom seat with matching passenger backrest, and a lowered-and-trimmed front fender. The new extended saddlebags are a one-piece, injection-molded, full-depth design that offers increased capacity. Color-matched rear fascia panel fills the space between each saddlebag and the rear fender, and it incorporates LED stop/tail/turn lights.

A new custom paint scheme is offered in three-color combinations, with color-matched front fairing skirt, upper fork slider covers, and license plate light cover. The Glide's paint schemes are Candy Concord with Pale Gold Leaf Graphics, Spiced Rum with Gold Leaf Graphics, and Tequila Sunrise with Pale Gold Leaf Graphics. The bike wouldn't be complete without standard ABS and cruise control, security alarm, and a 40-watt Harmon/Kardon stereo system. Enhancing the Glide's looks are the Rumble Collection grips, footboard inserts, passenger and shifter pegs, and brake pedal pad. This was a bike I enjoyed riding! There is plenty of room for gear on the Glide without it being oversized, and the bike has lots of power and is comfortable. I would like to get my hands on this model for our next trip to Sturgis.
